Bobby Mackey Interview: Country Music Lives On

Last fall, I had a dream gig. I played Bobby Mackey’s Music World, The World’s Most Haunted Honky Tonk located in Wilder, KY.  You can read about the history of this truly unique place on the article written by Ohio Outlaw country star Dallas Moore, HERE.  Yes, this place – it’s haunted. No lie.  On stage, a monitor started broadcasting an old radio sportscast during my set. I got chills and experienced things I’m afraid to recount on the “Ghost Tour”.  And that’s just the beginning. But here’s the kicker – it’s also a magical, lively and fun honky tonk with a great dance floor, wonderful stage, great sound system and colorful patrons that line the walls looking for good Country Music. Because, as Bobby Mackey says, Country Music Lives On. It sure does in Wilder, KY.

And that’s because Bobby Mackey is a true country music traditionalist. He books bands and artists that carry that torch and keep it burning strong.  He also plays there with his band every weekend he’s in town. After my set with Nashville singer/songwriter Cley Reynolds,  I witnessed Bobby Mackey in action. Fantastic players pumping out solid bass lines, tasty guitar licks and mournful steel swells…all supporting the smooth voice of Bobby Mackey.  When he sang “The Way I Am”,  I actually cried. Yep. Just beautiful.

He’s got a brand new album out and I interviewed him the next day in his office for my Highwaywoman Radio show.  I’ll let Bobby tell you in his own words about his life in music and you can get a taste of his truly great country record, Country Music Lives On.  Go buy it. Seriously – here’s the LINK.

The next time you’re coming through Cincinnati, go across the river to Wilder, KY and visit this famous honky tonk and see Bobby Mackey in person. As he says, “Come for the ghosts, stay for the music.”

Listen: (Don’t forget to hit PAUSE first on the Outlaw TV player on the right side of the page)

I’ll see you on down the trail.
