July Artist of the Month: Sturgill Simpson

about-pic-2

Sturgill Simson is Outlaw Magazine’s Artist of the Month for August 2016.  His career is one that depicts the rise of an independent music warrior, one who has battled quietly but steadily, remaining consistent in his dedication to artistry, creating music on his own terms and allowing the world to discover him at it’s own pace. In Sturgill’s case, that time frame wasn’t very long. His debut album, High Top Mountain, (produced by now-the-most-sought-after-producer-in-real-music Dave Cobb) was released in 2013, only three years ago. He woke up many a “modern day” country music listener with this album, and restored hope to those hungering for the quality missing in “popular”, mass-produced and emotionless records. The energy of High Top Mountain is filled with sincere emotion, depth, and humility and delivered with a voice reflecting the quality of country heroes past.

In 2014, he released Americana Grammy-nominated album Metamodern Sounds In Country Music (Dave Cobb again). Rolling Stone even placed it on the “50 Best Albums of 2014” list.

Now on major label Atlantic Records, Sturgill has not lost his purity or his authentic spirit. He continues to grow and expand in his musical expressions and simply create really great music. His latest self-produced album, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, is truly stunning. With live recorded tracks and a concentration on sequence and synergy, Simpson went “old-school” while remaining not only relevant, but perhaps revolutionary.

“I knew I wanted to make a concept record in song-cycle form, like my favorite Marvin Gaye records where everything just continuously flows. I also wanted it to be something that when my son is older and maybe I’m gone, he can listen to it and get a sense of who I was. I just wanted to talk as directly to him as possible. I really questioned whether I wanted to spend however many more years on this bus, not being there and seeing all that was happening. That’s where this record came from, just processing all that guilt and homesickness. I had to figure out a way to put that into music, so I decided to write the whole record from the perspective of a sailor going to sea and not knowing if he’s ever coming home.

I remembered an old letter that I read, written by my Grandfather Ora to my grandmother when he was in the Army. He was in the South Pacific during World War II, and he thought he was going to die. So he wrote a goodbye letter to her and their newborn son. He finally made it home five years later.” – Sturgill Simpson

If for some reason you don’t own all three Sturgill Simpson albums, the time is now to add them to your collection. They are all not only high quality, but they bring something new to the ears and the soul every time you listen to them. Like a Waylon song still can do the same, Sturgill is one of those timeless artists that make an impact. He is no “flash in the pan”, his music is infinite.
