Album of the Month: Darrell Scott

dsKentucky’s own has laid claim to an uprising of roots glory as of late, with the “country-on-the-edge” golden boy Chris Stapleton creating an underground media storm and racking up awards, Sturgil Simpson’s beautifully executed new album A Sailor’s Guide To Earth may be one of the best albums of the year, and then there’s the latest release of the ever-consistent Darrell Scott, Couchville Sessions (Full Light, Thirty Tigers).

Scott’s honeyed soulful and passionate vocals, coupled with stellar songwriting, are an unbeatable combination in any form. From his collaborations with Tim O’Brien to his songwriting feats (over 70 artists have covered his material), Scott is an influential favorite amongst other songwriters, almost like a coveted secret pleasure as he’s eluded the mainstream route as an Artist. He’s the epitome of the word (word itself, not the genre)  “Americana”, in that he’s a combination of folk, blues, bluegrass, soul country and rock ‘n roll. In fact, he pokes fun at any genre labeling at all in the lead track “Down To The Water” of  Couchville Sessions.

The album isn’t exactly new, but rather “new again”. Fifteen years ago, Scott recorded the sessions with Nashville musicians Kenny Malone, Dan Dugart and Danny Thompson in his living room. In 2015, he added in the skills of Billy Payne (Little Feat) and the new release feels warm, fresh and is full of greatness.

Scott always tips his hat to his Heroes in one way or another in between his own offerings, especially to Hank Williams. Here we get “Ramblin’ Man” along with nods to James Taylor, Townes Van Zandt and Johnny Cash.

Couchville Sessions is Outlaw Magazine’s Album of the Month. It just goes to show, Music is timeless. Whether it was recorded 15 years ago or yesterday, it is new to us. And it’s wonderful.
